The story behind our featured listing
Giant Oak Estate, the ultimate in gracious southern living, is much more than a
home. It’s unique in its ability to fit your every need. The restorative
serenity of a much-loved family manor on luxury acreage in a true neighborhood,
with just one caring owner over decades – that’s only part of what makes Giant
Oak so intriguing.
Giant Oak is the original heart of a 70-acre parcel of pristine land that served
as a gentleman’s retreat for a successful Atlanta physician in the years after
World War II. In the 1950’s the doctor kept horses for pleasure riding and spent
a goodly portion of his leisure time at an old cottage that graced the property.
The current owner is a Marietta/Cobb native who purchased the parcel as a young
college student three decades ago, living in the old retreat and planning his
dream even then. Today’s main house was lovingly designed and built by he and
his wife of 35 years with their future family in mind. As years went by, the
couple added a 1600 square foot secondary structure that is currently an
office/workshop but would also be ideal for a guest house, music or art studio
or mother in law suite. Both dwellings sit confidently among a gardener’s
paradise for future owners who embrace the outdoors, with expansive lawns,
exceptional outdoor features and plenty of room to expand if need be. Though
graced by Georgia pines and hardwoods, the backyard garden is dominated by a
signature old oak that, once experienced, will not soon be forgotten. The
idyllic setting and gracious abode provide true country estate living and a
unique opportunity in the heart of Atlanta’s most thriving suburban area.
Giant Oak is a culmination of decades of planning, personal design and teamwork,
and the loving details are apparent on every scale. As Giant Oak was being
completed, the owner turned his discerning eye for excellence to the remainder
of his land. He named his development Sweet Pine Creek, a signature neighborhood
that’s matured with grace, anchoring the west Cobb community with upscale family
homes and populating the area’s top-ranked schools, both public and private.
Giant Oak also enjoys easy access to Kennesaw State University, Wellstar
Kennestone Hospital, the Marietta Country Club and the Dallas Highway shopping
corridor. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport can be reached “the back way”
via the Camp Creek Parkway extension.
History preserved and…sports ~ Marietta and west Cobb hold dear some of the
Civil War’s most treasured historic sites as well as its best parkland, and
Giant Oak sits smack in the midst. Directly to the west rises Lost Mountain,
where 152 acres of land are held in a non-profit trust that will one day be a
passive park with trails but in 1864 was the western anchor of the 11 mile long
“Brushy Mountain Line” of defensive earthworks dug by the Confederate army. That
line stretched eastward to Pine Mountain, almost due north of Giant Oak and
Brushy Mountain, near present day Costco at Barrett Pkwy. Just to the east is
the antebellum Bullard-Stockton House, which sits on 112 acres of parkland
called Green Meadows Preserve, featuring community gardens and related
activities.
